The area of Cave in the East Riding of Yorkshire consists of the villages of South and North Cave, about 2 miles apart, and the hamlets of Riplingham and Drewton. The area is about 14 miles west of Hull and at various times throughout the 19th century each of the villages held race meetings. The earliest record of a meeting in Cave was on Monday 23rd May 1864 on land surrounding Cave Castle, between North Cave and South Cave. Today Cave Castle Golf Club occupies some of the land on which the former racecourse was situated. The final meeting took place on Monday 4th May 1874 with the final race, the Scramble Stakes falling to Bondinella. |
